MPox 1. WHO declared global public health emergency, on 14 th August, related to ongoing outbreak of mpox in Democratic Republic of Congo. 2. Symptoms – fever, headache myalgia before onset of rash Rash has different stages. Usual incubation period is 5 to 13 days 3. Mpox – viral zoonotic infection, caused by monkey pox virus. 4. Monkeypox Virus – same genus as variola (causative agent of small pox) & vaccinia (virus used in smallpox vaccine). First isolated in Denmark from a colony of lab monkeys. 5. First identified as a cause of human disease in 1970s in current DRC. Two distinct strains of monkeypox Virus exists in Africa. Clade I is responsible this time 6. Animal to human & human to human transmission can occur. 7. Human to Human Transmission ⁃ spread by direct contact with infectious sores, scabs or body fluids. Also by contact with materials or fomites. Can spread through respiratory secretions or vertical transmission. 8. Infectious ⁃ from onset of symptoms to until all skin lesions have scabbed over. 9. PCR & Serology for diagnosis. 10. Symptomatic treatment. Tecovirimat/ Cidofovir used in severe cases.
